Permanent audition

So this is a little embarrassing.

I design stickers. I sell stickers. People happily buy my stickers. You’d think I’d be happily sticking them on everything I own.

Nope.

In my world, putting a sticker on something is a commitment. Once you peel off the backing, there’s no going back. I know this because one of my stickers has been on my water bottle for three years and still looks brand new, which unfortunately proves my point.

So here’s what I do instead.

When I find a sticker I love, I don’t peel off the backing and give it a permanent home. That would make way too much sense. I put a tiny piece of poster tack on the back instead and audition it, sometimes for weeks or even months, and every once in a while, for years.

Apparently, I have commitment issues.

I know, it’s weird. Which makes it all the more ridiculous that I design stickers.

The funny thing is, I’m not even saving them. I see them every day. They’re on my wall or propped up somewhere nearby, quietly waiting for their moment. Most people peel the backing off without giving it a second thought. Meanwhile, I’m over here treating stickers like they’re auditioning for a starring role.

We all seem to have one of those funny little rules that makes perfect sense to us and leaves everyone else scratching their head. Mine just happens to involve poster tack.
